Can a monitor/cable crash a PC? Or is my GPU on the fritz?

I have a Sapphire 6850 1gb RadeonHD using the latest catalysts (12.10). The rest of my rig is rather old, E8400 3ghz C2D, 4gb ram. Never overclocked, havent touched a thing in months. I bought the 6850 back in may because my evga GTX260 died.

Anyway I've been running fine for months since I rebuilt my system back in may. Today however I was playing Skyrim, when I decided to make something to eat. Instead of shutting down, I just hit esc to open the menu, and left. Came back after 20 minutes, and to my horror my screen was white/yellow filled with vertical bands, and I could hear the sound skipping crazy. Total lock up. Rebooted and my monitor wouldn't receive signal. The system wasnt locking up, I could turn caps/numlock on and off. Just no video signal. Its an old 20" Xceptre X20WC over DVI cable that I bought off monoprice years ago. No CMOS codes or beeps or anything.

So I swapped out my 6850 with my older but trusty 8800GT. Sure enough, over the same cable it worked fine. No lock ups or anything. To see if it was a DVI or monitor issue I swapped DVI cables. The top DVI port on my 6850 didnt work, but using the bottom one it worked once (was able to boot).

I dug out my old as 14" CRT and used the DVI-VGA adapter that came with my 6850 and that worked fine as well. Lastly I tried a cheapo LCD TV over HDMI, and ran Skyrim for over an hour (camera rotates around your character after a few minutes of idle). Came back, no problems.

But just a few minutes ago as I was typing this post, it locked up again. Same white screen with black vertical bars throughout. I've reinstalled drivers, and Im using default settings. Like I said never overclocked. Its not artifacting over what you normally see, its completly white with vertical lines.

Stumped because the case is well ventilated, no overheating or anything that I can see or tell especially since its rather cool in my room and GPUTemp reports it idling at 37c.

So does this my 6 month old gpu is friggin dying on me already? Or could a faulty DVI Port/cable cause a lockup? But if thats the case, why did it just happen over HDMI?
