Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 11 / ATI 5770 problem

I am running into a strange problem: when I try to play a DVD using cyberlink PowerDVD11 ultra 11, I get an alternate display of 'snow' / 'digital noise' and my normal desktop.

This started last month, when I temporarily swapped out my current video card (MSI Radeon 5770) with a different Radeon (PowerColor Radeon 3950).

I can play DVDs just fine with Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, but cyberlink gives me this snow effect.

It gets even more interesting...

Last night I have upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Pro and from cyberlink OEM 9 to cyberlink ultra 11. The behavior is the same. Media Player/Center works, cyberlink does not.

maybe there was an error in the knob sketch? Nah - second thoughts if sweep doesn't work, it must be something to do with your install. Sweep works fine for me.
