Best sub-$100 Home Theater Speaker Solution?

I've been using the built-in speakers in my HDTV for about a year now and have noticed that they've started getting rather fuzzy when turned up, downright distorted actually, especially on the low end. Now I've known for a while that I'd need to get some kind of seperate speaker solution but the built-in's worked better than I could have imagined for regular movie/tv use that I'd not bothered.

But, moneys tight now and both me and the wife are trying hard to knock out our still remaining student loans and I'm wondering what my best option for a speaker/amp solution under $100 is. This is for a fairly small room and I'm just looking for something able to get to decent volume without distortion. Heavy lows don't really matter to me and I don't care about Surround. Two nice bookshelves would actually be perfect for our setup.

So with that in mind what would you recommend? I had a friend recommend active monitor speakers like http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studiophile-Powered-Monitor-Speakers/dp/B0051WAM1O/ref=dp_ob_title_ce and another recommend PC-style speakers like http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/surround-sound-speaker-z506. I've also wondered if http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10904&cs_id=1090406&p_id=7495&seq=1&format=2#description given the typical quality of their other components?

Thoughts? And yeah, I know I should spend way more blah blah blah.

Thanks for the input. My basic contention with land out of the equation is that the market value of the house should be close to the insurance replacement value.

It shouldn't affect whether you get homeowner's insurance or not, but any reported structural damage would definitely affect getting a home loan in almost all cases. If the lender requires a pest ...
