Lights and monitoring

Hi all,

I'm still waiting for my Pi but project research is already fully going on.

I have three main purpose for my Pi as a "production" phase if the supply of them ever gets high enough that I dare to order myself a second one.

1) media player: (the HDMI with 1080p is just too tempting) This might need second nic and LACP supporting switch to get full-HD streaming going smoothly.

2) environment monitoring: weather station and few points of temperature. I'm planning to hook either DS2482-100 or DS2482-800 from Maxim to provide me 1-wire channel(s) through i2c. All needed sensors are available as 1-wire or i2c anyways. On top of exterior information my plan is to record temperatures from few key point inside my apartment to find smooth pattern for my heating when needed.

3) Stage 1 ambient mood light control through my apartment: again i2c is friend and for this I was planning to put PCA9685 from NXP. This will provide me 12bit PWM for 5 RGB channels. Should be good enough for my use. 12bit resolution is more than enough and 5 channels is good start. Then I just need to find suitable FETs to run the LED stripes.
For example http://www.dealextreme.com/p/72w-300-5050-smd-led-rgb-light-flexible-strip-dc-12v-5-meter-114454?item=94 will need 14.4W/meter which is not bad. 5meter reels are pretty cheap and operates on 12V with internal limiter resistors for each 3 LED block. I do not have experience for these stripes, so need to get one reel for testing.

Stage 2: expanding RPi controlling also my downlights.

I have not even looked for ready software for these. The media player functionality is hopefully something I do not need to do myself, but the data collection and light controls are pretty straight forward to do. After I get the control side done, the next step will be to build Android app to fix this all from my phone with presets (like when my phone connects to my home wlan it kicks up light FE. on 40% duty so I don't need to come in to dark apartment).

Any ideas, thoughts and remarks are welcome.
